Crash Data
Crash Data - Statistics are provided describing Missouri's crash experience and characteristics. The primary source for these statistics is the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System maintained by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Missouri's historic crash and severity experience as well as causal factors are described including number of persons killed and injured, death and injury rates, crash circumstances, speed involvement, alcohol involvement, young driver involvement, and older driver involvement. The publication Missouri Traffic Safety Compendium provides detailed crash statistics.
Crash and Personal Severity Two statistical tables are provided: 1) Number of persons killed or injured in Missouri traffic crashes; and 2) Number of fatal / personal injury and property damage crashes. The number of persons killed includes any person whose death was a result of a traffic crash within 30 days of the incident. The number of persons injured includes any person who received a disabling, evident but not disabling, or probable but not apparent injury as a result of a traffic crash. A fatal crash includes any crash in which one or more persons were killed as a result of a traffic crash and their death occurred within 30 days of the incident. An injury crash includes any crash in which one or more persons received a disabling, evident but not disabling, or probable but not apparent injury as a result of a traffic crash. A property damage crash includes any crash in which no person was killed or injured but property was damaged in the incident.
Crash Circumstances - Statistics are provided for six crash causative factors: Speed Involvement, Alcohol Involvement, Young Driver Involvement, Older Driver Involvement, Commercial Vehicle Involvement, and Motorcycle Involvement. These causative factors are defined as:
Alcohol Involved Traffic Crash: - Any crash in which one or more drivers or pedestrians were drinking and, in the opinion of the investigating officer, their intoxicated condition contributed to the cause of the crash. There are strong indications that investigating officers under-report drinking involvement as a contributing factor in traffic crashes. As a result, this under-reporting should be taken into consideration when reviewing drinking involved data. Speed Involved Traffic Crash: - Any crash in which one or more drivers of motorized vehicles were exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for conditions and, in the opinion of the investigating law enforcement officer, the driver error contributed to the cause of the crash. Younger Driver Involved Traffic Crash: - Any crash in which one or more drivers of motorized vehicles directly involved in the traffic crash were under the age of 21. Click here for young driver involved crashes by crash severity and number of persons killed and injured.
Mature Driver Involved Traffic Crash: - Any crash in which one or more drivers of motorized vehicles directly involved in the traffic crash were 55 years of age or older. Click here for mature driver involved crashes by crash severity and number of persons killed and injured.
Commercial Vehicle Involved Traffic Crash: - Any crash in which one or more commercial motor vehicles was directly involved in the incident. Commercial motor vehicles include trucks having a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more, cargo vans, vans with less than nine occupants, limousines having 9 to 15 occupant capacity, buses having occupant capacities of 16 or more, and vehicles displaying hazardous materials placards. Motorcycle Involved Traffic Crash: Any crash in which one or more motorcycles were directly involved in the traffic crash. Mopeds and all terrain vehicles (ATV's) are not considered motorcycles for the purpose of this analysis.
